The Presbyterian Community Center was established in 1967 to address the immediate human needs of Southeast Roanoke residents. Twenty seven percent of the neighborhood populations, including 39% of school age children, are below the Federal poverty level. Twenty two percent of households in Southeast Roanoke have incomes of less than $10,000 per year. The PCC also serves Northeast Roanoke city and the town of Vinton. They offer emergency financial assistance that includes a wide variety of help such as food, prescriptions, etc. In 2007, Emergency Services assisted with $81,000 that helped 1,516 families that included 1,211 children. The PCC Food Pantry distributed 2,344 food orders valued at approximately $85,000. These food orders helped feed 5,175 individuals. Pathways for Youth is an after school program for low-income children in S.E. Roanoke. This program serves about 50 children from grades 3-12. They offer tutoring, homework assistance, cultural opportunities and field trips for academic enrichment. Tutors and mentors work with the children daily and are a positive and uplifting influence on those children’s lives.
